Folk Sayings #1

Black-Eyed Susan

As crooked as a dog's hind leg.  (My dad used this one all of the time.  "Whoever built that fence didn't know what they were doing.  It's as crooked as a dog's hind leg!"  Refers to anything that is crooked that should be straight.)

As cross as two sticks.  (Referring to anyone that is angry.)

She has a face that would stop a clock. (Used when someone is homely.)

Ugly as a mud fence. (Used when someone is homely.)

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. (It is easier to prevent a problem from occurring in the first place than to try to fix it afterwards.)

A rolling stone gathers no moss; but a stagnant pool stinks. (Most people have heard the first part of this saying, but the second part is rarely heard.)

A stitch in time saves nine. (My grandmother made most of my clothes, so I was always pestering her to hurry up and finish when she was making me a new garment.  This was often her response.)

A sore on the tip of the tongue is sign that you have told a lie.  (We always called them "lie bumps.")

A snake never dies till sundown. (I was always warned about getting to close to a snake that had just been killed because of this saying.)

As clear as mud. (Say this when something is very confusing.)

A whistling woman and a crowing hen never come to a good end. (I just love to whistle, so I have been told this many times!)

And the next is one of my favorites!

Savage as a meat axe.  (Referring to anyone or anything that is extremely savage, furious or ferocious.)

  1. One of my Mothers' common sayings was, "Look at him run like a striped-a$$ ape". I have no clue what the connection is.

"Raining to beat the band", is one I use but I can't see what one has to do with the other.

"Crazy as a bedbug". Sounds like another government-funded program; determining the mental faculties of bedbugs.

I'm sure that if I wasn't deliberately trying to think of them, more would come to mind.

  2. I vaguely remember hearing something about the striped-a$$ ape, but I know nothing about that one.

I wonder if the sound of the rain is louder than a band and that is where that saying comes from?

I have always heard "Crazy as a bedbug" also.

If someone asks me about sayings, I never can think of any. I just have to jot them down when I think of them.

  3. I'm a whistler, so my Pawpaw often admonished me about crowing hens. And, I was frequently told I had lie bumps on my tongue.

Whenever I would excuse myself after belching (I'm VERY ladylike, dontchaknow) I would hear, "Excuse a pig a hog knows better."

If he was particularly happy, Pawpaw would declare (now, this one is rather vulgar) "I'm as tickled as a puppy with two peters."

Asked how he was doing, he would often say, "I'm as fine as frog's hair."

That's all I can think of at the moment that you haven't mentioned. My Pawpaw was *quite* the character. :o)

  4. Rach, I love "Excuse a pig. . . " I have never heard that, but I am going to be sure and use it! :)

I have also never heard the one about the puppy, but it is rather funny!

  5. I remembered another one from my Mother. When referring to a person who had good intentions but failed in some endeavor, she said he was just like an S & F & F & S horse. Meaning, he started and farted and fell and s##t.
