Mystery Item Answer

 . . . and the answer is:

The bark mill in the photo is located on the
Blue Ridge Parkway at Mabry Mill.

Several folks mentioned that it was a sorghum or a molasses press and they do resemble each other.  If you click here, you can see a sorghum press that is also located at Mabry Mill.

Mystery Item Answer

The mystery item is:

A whetstone for sharpening knives.

This one belonged to my Grandpa Burnette.  This was one of his tools that I was not allowed to mess around with because he was always afraid that I would drop and break it. Just about anyone can put an edge on a knife, but depending on how it is done, it will either last a long time or it will need sharpening again soon.  Grandpa was very good at putting a nice, sharp and lasting edge on knives.  Interestingly enough, my Grandma was even better!

The Mystery Item is:  A player piano roll!

I took this photo at a flea market and this person had hundreds of the rolls for sale.
You can see more rolls stacked underneath the one in the photo.

Mystery Item Answer

The mystery item is a Toledo Torch. They were first manufactured in 1929 and they burned kerosene. They are heavily weighted in the bottom to prevent them from tipping over  When I was growing up, I remember going by highway construction sites and these torches would be lit as a warning to avoid the area.  I was always fascinated by them and would want to know why we could not stop and get one! Now, I CAN have my own because they are still for sale!  Click here for Toledo Torches.

Mystery Item Answer

The answer to yesterday's mystery item is:
A "Gee Haw Whimmy Diddle" or a "Hooey Stick."

When I was growing up, we always called it a "gee haw whimmy diddle."
"Gee" means to turn right and "Haw" to the left when driving a team of oxen or horses.
I got my first horse, when I was in the second grade, so Grandpa immediately taught me to always say "gee" or "haw" in addition to a light tug on the reins when I wanted to turn my horse.  (A fun side note: When we bought my horse, "Black Beauty," it was a two for one deal because she was pregnant!)

To see how you play with this toy, watch this excellent video on youtube uploaded by dj51florida

Amaze & mystify your friends with the miraculous, direction-switching, Gee Haw Whimmy Diddle!

Mystery Item Answer

Yesterday's mystery item was:  A Buzz Saw Toy!

To see one of these toys in action, check out this YouTube video by TWooley2:

When I was a child, Grandma would make these toys for me out of a large button and a string. Wow!  They would really spin and whiz!  Unfortunately the string would break rather easily.  Grandma would always let me play with them but with strict instructions to never hold it directly in front of my face. She did not want the button to hit me in the eye when the string broke . . . and it WAS going to break! Even now when I play with one of these toys, I always hold it angled away from my face.  Rather safe than sorry!

When you get the buzz saw going, it produces an angry buzzing sound. The harder and faster you pull the string the louder that delightful whirring buzz! Please be sure to heed the advice given in the video about not getting long hair tangled into the string!  Let's just say that I have had long hair most of my life and I have personal experience with this no-no!

Mystery Item Answer

The answer to yesterday's mystery item is:
A children's toy called a "Jacob's Ladder!"
Quite a few of you knew the correct answer!

This folk toy is made from blocks of wood held together by ribbons. It was supposedly one of the only toys that frontier children were allowed to play with on Sundays because they could sit and play with it quietly. The name of the toy refers to Jacob's Ladder in the Bible (Genesis 28:12).  This toy was mentioned in an 1889 article of Scientific America.

The following video shows how to play with a Jacob's Ladder:

Mystery Item Answer

Are you ready for this? They are POT SCRUBBERS! Remember that most cooking used to be done in heavy cast iron pots and pans. These hickory scrubbers will work miracles on burned on food. (However, I do not think that you would want to use this on your modern non-stick pans!)

To make these scrubbers, you take a thick hickory stick and use a draw knife to carefully shave pieces almost to the end, but leave them connected about 1/2" from the end.  Then, after you have shaved enough to make the brushy part, bend them downward and either use a piece of leather or another piece of thinly shaved hickory to tie the shaved pieces to keep them in place.  When it is time to do dishes, simply wet the scrubber and the hickory shavings become flexible and make an excellent pot scrubber.

Folks used to also make broom-sized scrubbers like these to scrub wood floors.

If you look carefully, you can see how the piece of hickory is shaved to make the brushy part
The larger one is the actual pot scrubber.
The two smaller ones are more like toys than anything,
but they would also make good small scrubbers.

Now you know!   :D
Thanks to Becky, Rae, Leslie & Meg for posting your guesses!

Mystery Item Revealed

I had a difficult time attempting to take a photo of yesterday's mystery item in use. First, I realized that all of my modern tables were too thick to clamp the PINCUSHION on the edge.  After walking all over the house, I finally found that the small table in our breakfast nook was thin enough.   Then, I just could not seem to get enough light for the photo, so I hope that you get the general idea of how this works.

In a time when everything was handsewn, this 19th century pincushion could be clamped on a table so that ladies could easily locate their pins.

The first person to guess the answer was Dave S.
Meg C. was also correct.

Thanks to everyone for playing Mystery Item!
