At that time, I already owned two other dulcimer since the 1980s, but I did not play very often. This new instrument had a very sweet sound and it revived my love of dulcimer playing. I realized that it was a superior instrument when compared with the other two that I owned.

The craftsmanship is gorgeous and the sound is wonderful. It is one of my favorite dulcimers.

The label inside the dulcimer shows that it was built by “Monroe Burrage, 2631 Harvard Ave., Durham, NC 27703 on May 18, 1999.” It is instrument #186.

Is anyone familiar with this builder? I would love to learn more about him and see other instruments that he built.

Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09682464748142064146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618206471505981977.post-15093539422372062522024-02-24T11:11:00.003-05:002024-02-24T14:27:39.224-05:00
New Dulcimer and a Renewed Interest

For Christmas in 2022, my husband surprised me with a dulcimer built by Jack Ferguson. This beauty is made of cherry.

I have know Jack for many years and together we formed the Roanoke Valley Dulcimers group around 2014. Life and work got in the way of my dulcimer playing and I basically quit playing for years. That new dulcimer ignited my interest again. Since December 2022, I have been playing on a regular basis, both with the Roanoke Valley Dulcimers and the Blue Ridge Dulcimer Ensemble. Fairly recently, I was asked to join the Star City Dulcimer Quartet when one of their members moved to another state.

My next post will hopefully answer the questions "How many dulcimers DO I actually own?" I truly do not know. So, I intend to have photos and descriptions of the dulcimers coming soon!

Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09682464748142064146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618206471505981977.post-65129758279607802222020-03-14T21:17:00.002-04:002020-03-14T21:17:53.788-04:00Be CarefulI can still remember my grandma talking about the Spanish flu and how terrible it was. She was fifteen years old then, but she was plenty old enough to understand what was happening. When she would mention the flu, she would generally just mention something about so-and-so died or their children or parents died because of the flu. She never talked about fear. I have to wonder if that was because Floyd County, Virginia was not that densely populated at the time and they lived on a farm. Unlike today, it wasn't like they were living on top of each other or had to rely on stores for just about everything that they needed.

Over the years, I have given thought to what would happen if there was an epidemic of some sort and how I would handle it now that I am a city-dweller. Overall, I feel pretty prepared for COVID-19 or the Coronavirus. If I could, I would stay at home and not go anywhere until this thing has played out. Unfortunately, that is not possible because my employer is still requiring us to come into work each day. Even though we are officially closed to the public, we are still going to have a drive-thru window open. In addition, I know that I have been as careful as I possibly can be, but what about my co-workers? Have they taken every precaution possible? Will I be exposed to this virus because of someone not being careful? As someone with underlying health conditions (a comprised immune system thanks to having Lyme Disease and also being an asthma sufferer) that makes this pretty dangerous for me. I will admit that I am pretty well terrified.

Be careful out there and take every precaution possible.Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09682464748142064146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618206471505981977.post-6112850229933910972018-12-10T11:12:00.001-05:002018-12-10T11:12:59.441-05:00

NOTES

When I make this recipe, I generally use pecans rather than walnuts, but they are both tasty.

I have made this recipe many different ways over the years. Simply substitute your favorite liquor for the bourbon. I have used whiskey, bourbon, Jim Beam Red Stag Dark Cherry bourbon, cinnamon whiskey, dark rum, pineapple rum and other flavored rums, creme de menthe, Grand Marnier, butterscotch schnapps, orange cream rum, etc. You get the idea! 😀

I have never rolled the balls in granulated sugar. I always use powdered sugar, but I’m sure both are good.

I have been using this recipe for 16 years and it is just awesome.

When I was growing up, Halloween was something that I always looked forward to with much anticipation. I can still remember my first Halloween mask. My mom took me to the Ben Franklin store in Hillsville, Virginia. I got to pick out my own mask! It was a monster with this horrible itchy black hair sticking out. Do you remember those old masks back in the 70s that were very difficult to breathe in? The whole inside would collect the moisture from your breathe and start sweating, so pretty soon, your whole face would be wet. Ick. And remember those stretchy little cords that went around your head? That thing would always get caught in my long hair and make a tangled mess, pulling out gobs of hair. But, it was so much fun!

I remember in 1973, mom and dad were having a bunch of remodeling work done on our house. While part of it was going on, we were living in my uncle's little log cabin just up the road. There was no indoor plumbing! When Halloween rolled around that year, it was a gloomy and cloudy, and it was blowing snow. I can remember daddy telling me that he did not know if I would be able to go trick-or-treating because of the snow. I remember the panic! OH NO!!! As it turned out, we did end up going.

Trick-or-Treating was always quite the ordeal. Where I grew up, there wasn't really a street to go begging on, so mom and dad loaded me up in the car and drove from house-to-house. They would pull into the driveway and I would hop out of the car and run up to the door and scream TRICK-OR-TREAT!! I can remember them telling me to never take off my mask and let anyone see who I really was because that was half of the the fun. We also never started trick-or-treating until it was completely dark. That was part of the fun!

As I got older and started school, my friends and I would go together and each year. Out parents would take turns driving us around. We always took great pleasure in going to our teacher's homes because we really did think that they would not recognize us. Right. I can remember one year going to my first grade teacher's home. Mrs. Ada Shelor greeted us at the door and invited us in. Well, even though I had been told to not go inside, this was my first grade teacher! She had an elaborate table set up with punch and CUPCAKES! I always thought that cupcakes were just magical, so I was pretty excited. She offered us a cupcake on a plate and a cup of punch. That is when it hit me! HOW was I going to drink and eat with my mask on?? Impossible! I tried to take the cupcake and punch and head for the door, but she was very insistent that we enjoy it there! Now what?! Dad had told me to never take my mask off and here was my teacher telling me to do it. What do you think I did? I yanked that mask off so that I could eat that cupcake!

Another teacher's home that we all looked forward to visiting was Mrs. Pauline Cock's home. Her and her husband would do some elaborate decorations. (This was long before Halloween became such a commercial venture with everyone decorating. Most homes back then just turned on the porch light, put a jack o'lantern on the steps, and maybe had a cardboard cutout skeleton or witch on the door.) I can remember one year, as we were starting to walk back to the car after receiving our treats, a ghost came flying out of the woods straight at us!!! AIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Talk about some little girls running back to the car! Hee! Mr. & Mrs. Cock had rigged up a ghost (a sheet) on a wire and had a pulley system that would make it look like the ghost was chasing you!

Another house that I remember quite well, although I can't remember who lived there, was just past Mrs. Cock's home. It was a big, white two story farmhouse. One year, there was a bubbling cauldron set up just outside the door and the lady that answered our call of "TRICK-OR-TREAT" was dressed as a scary, green-skinned witch!!! She really did scare me!

Of course, as we got a bit older, we would all go to one of our houses and set up elaborate decorations and try to scare the trick-or-treaters. One year, we set up in our carport. We had a bubbling caldron and all kinds of spooky decorations. One of us would hand out the treats and the others would be sitting very still on the ground, covered by a sheet. When the children would get the treats, we would jump up and chase the kids back to the car!

One year, we all went to my friend Debbie's house and we did a similar setup, but after the trick-or-treaters, we started walking to neighbor's homes where we soaped their windows and toilet papered their bushes and trees. We were bad! As we were walking along the road back to my friend's house, some of the older boys in the neighborhood drove by and threw eggs at us. Of course, I was the unlucky one and got pegged right in the ear with an egg. Not only did it hurt, but have you ever tried to wash raw egg OUT of your ear? No fun. The next morning, we did go back to the neighbor's homes and clean up the mess we had made.

The trunk or treats that seem so popular now just lack the fun, excitement, and spookiness of real trick-or-treating. It is a shame that our world has become so unsafe that children cannot experience the fun and joy of All Hallow's Eve.
Have you ever heard the saying, "I've got a crow to pick with you?" My dad used it all of the time and I also have heard many other people use it too. He used to say that to me if I had forgotten to do something or did something wrong. For example, I would come into the room and he would say "I've got a crow to pick with you!" Then he might follow that up with I forgot to pick him up some Pepsi the last time I went to the grocery store. Basically, he was saying that he had a complaint against me. If you have ever heard someone say "I've got a bone to pick with you", it means the same thing.

I finally found this in The Dictionary of Phrase and Fable (1898), page 254): on the Internet Archive.

"I must pluck a crow with you; I have a crow to pick with you.

I am
displeased with you, and must call you to account.

I have a small
complaint to make against you.

In Howell’s proverbs (1659) we find the
following,

“I have a goose to pluck with you,” used in the same sense." (p. 254)

Have you ever heard or used this saying?

I was sitting outside my house on September 1 and heard a loud rumble in the sky. When I looked up I saw the beautiful Memphis Belle flying directly toward my house! OH NO! My camera was INSIDE. When I am sitting outside, I almost always have my camera with me. Dang. I ran in and picked up the camera and was able to catch this photo as it flew back towards the airport. I waited and waited for it to fly back by again, but it never did.

I later found out that it was going to be back at the Roanoke airport on September 6 & 7 for tours and rides. It must be amazing to fly in it, but the cost for flights was $450. A bit beyond what I have to spend! Plus, I have to work both of those days.

While at work on September 6, I kept on hearing a loud rumble. Finally, I went outside and the Memphis Belle was flying over the library. Fortunately, I almost always have my camera with me at work, so I ran indoors and grabbed my camera.

When I was growing up, my Grandpa Burnette told me that any time that you can hear a rain crow calling, it will rain later on that day or night.

For years, I thought that a rain crow is what it was really called. One day I commented to a co-worker about a rain crow that was calling. He looked at me a bit strangely and asked me what I was talking about. I told him to listen a minute and I would tell him when I heard it again. He then told me that it was a yellow-billed cuckoo!

Listen for the rain crow. You are guaranteed that it will rain when you hear one!

In October 2011, just after the Meadows of Dan Elementary School burned, I wrote a blog post entitled "Tribute to a Wonderful Teacher" about Miss Ruth Jean Bolt, one of my teachers. She was my fifth grade teacher and she also taught science and art to the sixth and seventh grade. At the time of my original post, many of my elementary school classmates and school teacher friends encouraged me to send her a copy. I thought about sending it, but then, like so many things, I kept on putting if off.

Finally, just before Christmas, I printed the post and mailed it to Miss Bolt. Just this week, one of my friends from Meadows of Dan sent me a message to let me know that Miss Bolt wanted to talk to me. Now, I'm not much for talking on the phone and I try to avoid it whenever possible. For me, talking on the phone is just awkward because you can't read people's expressions and you may be calling them at a bad time and they are just too polite to say so. Add in the fact that I was calling one of my elementary school teachers, an authority figure, one that I respected SO much, just made this even harder. However, the day after receiving the message, I grabbed the phone and made the call before I could think about it too much.

What a fabulous phone conversation! Miss Bolt immediately made me feel at ease and her voice sounded just like it did in elementary school. She is such an interesting person to talk with that I could have stayed on the phone for hours with her! I am going to try to pay her a visit the next time that I am in Meadows of Dan.

To see what the new Meadows of Dan Elementary School looks like, click HERE.

If you had a teacher who means a lot to you, go ahead. Contact them. Just do it! It will make you feel good and I'm sure it will make them feel fabulous too!
We should be bundled up this time of year in Virginia, or, at least be wearing a coat. Instead, it is nice enough outdoors to be wearing a t-shirt, shorts, and sandals.

What a fine day to do a bit of dyeing! I have so much fiber, but I decided that I was going to dye various odds and ends of white wool roving that was in my stash to use for blending. I also wanted to dye up all of the silk hankies that I have.

When I was growing up, my mom & dad always told me that if I didn't behave, Santa would bring me a bag of coal or a box of switches for Christmas. I was no stranger to a switch nor what it was used for since I had a bad tendency to backtalk.

For some unknown reason, even knowing what a switch was, I always pictured finding a box of light switches in my stocking on Christmas morning. I was always horrified to think that I might get a box full of these!
The thought process in our family was that the only good snake was a dead snake! The only poisonous snakes in that part of Virginia are rattlesnakes and copperheads, although the only snake that we ever saw was either a garter snake or a black snake.

My grandpa always told me that the snake that I had to worry about the most was the dreaded hoop snake. He said that it looks just like a black snake, until it gets mad at you. Then it will bite its own tail, form a hoop and roll after you! He said that they only way you could escape from the rolling hoop snake was to run up a hill!
I am embarrassed and disappointed in myself. Now to start making excuses:

1. I am taking an online course on Coursera called "Plagues, Witches, and Wars: The Worlds of Historical Fiction." If you haven't checked out the courses available on this site, do it! They offer some fabulous classes and best of all . . . they are FREE! As long as you pass the class, you do get a certificate of completion. The one that I am taking involves lectures, TONS of reading, quizzes, and a paper. So far, I am absolutely loving it, but it is taking up quite a bit of time.

2. I have two craft shows coming up where I will be selling my handspun yarn, so I have been busy doing a LOT of spinning.

3. I have been furiously knitting on a shawl made from my handspun, so that I will have it to wear at the upcoming shows.

4. I have been learning to crochet!

5. I have dyed a bunch of my handspun yarns for the aforementioned craft shows.

6. I have been washing two fleeces getting them ready to send to the carding mill to be processed into roving. I finally got them in the mail about a week ago.

7. I have been having a few health issues that have sidelined me also, but hopefully, those are going to continue improving.

8. I have several ideas for some upcoming blog posts, but they are going to be difficult ones for me to write about from an emotional standpoint. However, I really do want to share them. Stay tuned!Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09682464748142064146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618206471505981977.post-65260284678649857762013-09-29T13:59:00.003-04:002013-09-29T14:11:45.163-04:00Shenandoah Valley Fiber Festival 2013I wanted to arrive at the festival before it actually opened so that I could get a good parking spot and be ready to pounce on the fleece sale! Last year, I arrived early, looked at the fleeces and decided to walk around and come back to the fleece sale. Right. Well, I came back about an hour later and all of the fleeces that I loved were GONE.

So, I left home around 6:20 AM. I was already passing by Raphine, Virginia on I-81 when the sun started putting on a show above the Blue Ridge Mountains.

I love driving through the Shenandoah Valley because it is such a beautiful area. I was almost looking forward to the scenery as much as I was the fiber festival. Well. Almost! Unfortunately, just south of Harrisonburg, I stopped as a rest area and when I pulled out, the FOG DESCENDED! I'm not talking about just a little fog, I'm talking pea soup fog where about the only thing that you can see is the lane lines just in front of your car. Forget about seeing any scenery! I'm not really fond of driving on I-81 at any time, but in thick fog is a particular nightmare. The traffic doesn't slow down below 70 for such a minor thing as being so foggy you can't see anything. Pfft! Slowing down is for sissies. Thank goodness about the time that I got to Woodstock, the fog was lifting. A good 40 miles in thick fog and fast traffic is not fun.

I arrived in Berryville about 9:20 AM and there were already quite a few cars there. I went ahead and entered and headed straight for the building with the fleece sale! There were a few people looking at the fleeces, but it was quite easy to examine the offerings. I had decided that I really needed a black alpaca fleece. I have it in my head that it is probably going to be the warp for a weaving project that I have in mind. There were about five true black alpaca fleeces. After debating back and forth between two, I finally decided on this one:

Then, I started looking at sheep fleeces. I always lose my way when looking at all of the gorgeous wool fleeces! So many breeds and so much to think about! I finally decided on this one gorgeous soft gray fleece that had been covered. Not ONE speck of vegetable matter!

Okay. Time for a trip to the car. Well, maybe I will just walk through this building on my way out since I know that another of my favorite vendors is located inside! Wild Hare Fiber Studio

A couple of weeks ago, Melissa, the owner of Wild Hare posted some photos of a new fiber blend that she is selling and I immediately fell in love with it and KNEW that I must have some!
